Keep it Pumping!

Keep it pumping…your heart, that is.  Since 1963, the United States has used the month of February to observe American Heart Health Month.  This February educate yourself and those near and dear to you about living healthy lifestyles.

Decades of progress in the United States on cutting cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking are being stalled by rising obesity rates, and heart disease will kill around 400,000 Americans this year, experts said on Monday.

Indeed, these are all staggering statistics but, we have to power to change them dramatically.  We can change our undisciplined mindsets toward health.  Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. If we can trust God with our job search, marriages, children and finances we can surely trust the one who created these bodies to best teach us how to care for them.

One half of African American women will die from stroke or heart disease.  African American adults are less likely to be diagnosed with coronary heart disease, however they are more likely to die from heart disease. Although African American adults are 40% more likely to have high blood pressure, they are 10% less likely than their non-Hispanic White counterparts to have their blood pressure under control.

African American and Hispanic American/Latina women should be concerned about getting heart disease because they tend to have more risk factors than white women. These risk factors include obesity, lack of physical activity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. If you’re a woman of color, take steps to reduce your risk factors.

Take action to reduce heart disease risk:

  1. Be physically active
  2. Don’t smoke
  3. Eat healthy
  4. Maintain a normal weight
  5. Know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides)

Haiti or U.S.?

I recently read an article on www.ac360.com that was very thought provoking.  In it the author, David Gewirtz shares his thoughts and feelings about America helping Haiti long term.  The United States helping its’ neighbors while seemingly neglecting our in house problems has been a long standing arguement.  But, in light of our current economic status and the war in Iraq, what should our stance be?  We have a moral obligation to help those in need at home and abroad, but at what cost?  Tell us what you think…

Haiti is not our long-term responsibility. Detroit is.

First, I’d like to send a good thought to all those suffering today in Haiti, and all their family members here in the United States.

No one can look at the horror of Haiti and not feel both a deep sense of sadness and a desire to help. It seems almost mean and selfish to suggest that we need to do something other than provide our full support to this devastated nation, but that’s exactly what I’m about to do.  Continue reading…

National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday 2010

January 24, 2010 is designated as National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.  This week is designed to educate and enlighten those who need information about the reality of abortion, to celebrate life at it’s earliest stage, and remember  to fight for those are the most defenseless-the unborn.  Here is a quick overview of what abortion is provided by www.abort73.com, an excellent source for those wanting the unfiltered truth about abortion:

Sisters of the Faith has also provided information for those who want to provide information, and/or seek assistance for themselves and others.  We also have shared stories of those who have been directly effected by abortion and most importantly, how God views us and the love He has for us even before we were conceived.  This is a topic that is near and dear to our hearts.  Please pray continually for this cause.

President of the Black Pro-Life Union Comments on Senator Harry Reid’s Comments About President Obama

Day Gardner (photo), president of the National Black Pro-Life Union, submitted the following comments regarding Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid’s comments the then Presidential candidate Barack Obama:

“The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate, Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid recently apologized for comments made about Barack Obama’s race during the 2008 presidential bid. He described then-Sen. Barack Obama as “light skinned” and “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” Hmmm…several questions come to mind, what exactly is Negro dialect?

Did Harry Reid think Barack Obama’s uncanny ability to turn on and off the so-called ‘Negro dialect’ like a water faucet — a good thing? Wouldn’t that make Obama a bit of a fake…a phony in every sense of the word?

Also, the main reason black people in general ‘put away’ the term Negro is because that word, which is Spanish for black–spurred the term, nigger.

And was Mr. Reid insinuating that if Barack Obama’s skin had been a shade or two darker he might have been less supporting?

I remember reading the Willie Lynch letter written in 1712.

Lynch writes: I have a fool-proof method for controlling your black slaves. I guarantee everyone of you that if installed correctly it will control the slaves for at least 300 years. My method is simple, any member of your family or any overseer can use it.

I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves, and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies, and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little test of differences and think about them. On the top of my list is “Age”, but it is there because it only starts with an “A”; the second is “Color” or shade…

Don’t forget, you must pitch the old Black vs. the young Black male, and the young Black male against the old Black male. You must use the dark skinned slaves vs the light skinned slaves, and the light skinned slaves vs. the dark skinned slaves. The Black Slave, after receiving this indoctrination, shall carry on and will become self refueling and self generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.

Hmmm…interesting.

I believe the comments made by Senator Harry Reid stems from a time in American history where the shade of a black man’s skin determined whether he was a field nigger or a house nigger. Either way, to the slave owner he was still just a slave; a sub-human to be owned and controlled.”

An Ohio teen ran away from home in fear for her life.  Why?  Her father allegedly threatened to kill her because she converted from Islam to Christianity.  Fathima Bary, 17, is a native of Sri Lanka.  She fled to Florida last month bound for the group she considers family that she met through a prayer group on Facebook.  A pastor took Fathima in and reached out to the state for help.   Check out the video below and keep this young woman in your prayers.
