When I was a child I had a favorite pillow that my mother had sewn just for me. The fabric had a lion print on it and I named my pillow companion Rabbit. Rabbit was my constant companion. This would cause Rabbit to become soiled. My mother would have to sneak Rabbit into the laundry because I was also quite attached to Rabbit’s unique “scent.”
On one particular laundry day Rabbit disintegrated in the wash. My mother took the pieces that she could salvage and gave Rabbit a new covering. Rabbit no longer looked like a lion but since I saw her transplant part of Rabbit it didn’t take me too long to adjust to Rabbit’s makeover. Rabbit and I continued to go and do everything together. Those trips to the laundry became less frequent (not for my mother’s lack of trying).
One day I went to school and she seized the opportunity to wash Rabbit. Rabbit disintegrated once again. This time she could only salvage the cover. There was no consoling me. No matter what she did from that point on I would know that it wasn’t “really” Rabbit. The inside was different.
We can change our wardrobes, alter our entertainment choices, and even get a new circle of friends. If the inside, our hearts, are still unclean nothing has truly changed. When we accept Jesus as our personal savior the change begins on the inside. We may not feel totally different at first but, as we grow spiritually the changes will begin to manifest outwardly. From the inside out.
