When I think about the few people that I consider my closest friends sometimes it is difficult for me to recall how our relationships came to be. Some I have known longer than others. Most of them have been staples in my life so long that I can’t remember how we became so close, yet I know that each relationship had to be cultivated. We had to learn each others personality traits, likes and dislikes, and as we became closer we shared laughs as well as tears. Each of these friends plays a different role in my life as I do in theirs. Our relationships evolved.
Our Creator already knows more about us than our parents, spouses or closest friends will ever know, and He desires that we would have an intimate relationship with Him. He woos us, as would any suitor and it is up to us whether we oblige Him or shoot Him down. It is good to know that He doesn’t use tired pick up lines and we can be assured that what we see is what we get. Everything we learn about Him as the relationship progresses is sure to be better. He never abandons us, and He never leaves us alone. We can trust Him. “Those who know the Lord trust Him, because He will not leave those who come to Him” (Psalm 9:10, NCV).
So, how then do we get to know the Lord? One of the best ways to get to know Him is to read His Word. The more we seek Him, the more of His character is revealed. If we really believe in God, and what His son Jesus did for us, our lives can be transformed. “You will seek Me and you will find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart”(Jeremiah 29:13, NKJV). God is not illusive, He has made Himself readily available to us. “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you” (Jeremiah 29:12, NIV). Through His Word we learn the importance of prayer. Prayer is our most intimate method of communication with Him. He hears us and He promises to answer us. Part 2
