Save a Life: May is Stroke Awareness Month

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and the number one cause of adult disability. Twice as many women die of stroke than breast cancer every year. One half of all African American women will die from stroke or heart disease. However, 80% of strokes can be prevented.

Stroke Prevention Guidelines

1.Know your blood pressure.

2.Find out if you have atrial fibrillation.

3.If you smoke, stop.

4.If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

5.Find out if you have high cholesterol

6.If you are diabetic…

7.Exercise.

8.Enjoy a lower sodium (salt), lower fat diet.

9.Circulation (movement of the blood through the heart and blood vessels) problems.

10.Know the Symptoms of Stroke.

Stroke Symptoms include:

SUDDEN numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg – especially on one side of the body.

SUDDEN confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.

SUDDEN trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

SUDDEN trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

SUDDEN severe headache with no known cause.

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you have any of these symptoms

If you have experienced any of these symptoms, you may have had a TIA or mini-stroke
