What’s Going On?

Everyone enjoys it when kids imitate adult behavior.  We loved the Little Rascals and even Kids Say the Darndest Things.  Unfortunately, the vast majority of adult behaviors that are being imitated today are not appropriate for adults or children.  Today I received a very disturbing email that highlighted this very issue.  (Click the link below to view the video).  The email included a link to a video of children at a party dancing imitating sex acts to a reggae tune!

Even if the parents condone and even applaud these behaviors, was there not at least one discerning adult be the referee and break it up?  Moreover, to go so far as to videotape and distribute it on YouTube is beyond my comphrension.  Where did the kids learn these moves in the first place?

We are facing a generation that will be lost if we do not begin to help adolescents draw clear lines between fantasy and reality.  Most of these youngsters (and some adults) watching MTV and BET are not aware that the videos they are watching are fabricated images of reality.  Young males and females are using music videos as reference material for male/female social interaction.  Children are having sex at alarming rates.  Little girls and young women are experimenting with lesbianism simply because the concept was introduced in a music video or they heard it in a song!  They have no idea what they are getting into.  Many believers spend time in their Word or watching the Word Network while their children are watching 106 and Park on BET.  Yes, the saints children are affected too.

“Behold children are a heritage from the Lord.  The fruit of the womb is a reward.”  Psalm 127:3-5

All too often we discuss problems without offering solutions.  In this situation, the solution is simple.   Parents need to live Christ-centered lives before their children.  As parents we are mandated by God to intentionally be involved in the lives of our children.  (Proverbs 22:6)   We have to set limits, require consistency and demonstrate righteous behavior before our children.

Our children should be required to read and study the Scriptures daily (I had to when I was growing up).  Praying with and for our children should be a daily occurrence.  Church attendance should not be negotiable.  We should know their friends and their friends parents.  Monitoring music and television programs is no longer optional, it is a requirement.  Know your child’s entertainment, what it consists of, where its origins.  Maintaining an open dialogue with our children will help reinforce everything we teach them.

What else can we do to preserve our kids innocence?
